8 Skateboarding Safety Tips

If you were to ask me for a few skateboarding safety tips I would say...

1. Skate within your level. This means that you should know your limits. If you don't know how to drop in yet, don't try to skate the half pipe. If you can't ollie well, then don't try to skate stairs. Skating within your own skill level is the best tip for safety.

2. Gradually advance. This goes along with the first tip. Work up to ollieing over four boards by first trying two and then three. Work skateboard variel flip before trying to learn how to do a 360 flip. Skate the four foot ramp, then the six, then the eight. It sounds like common sense, but a lot of times people get into "the zone" and forget what's safe for them.

3. Know your limit. It's fine to push yourself hard when you're skating. It helps you get better overall. You need to know your limit however. If you have tried about a hundred times to land a kickflip on a new stairs set, just give it a break. Those stairs probably wont be going anywhere soon. Remember to rest when you're tired.

4. Wear your helmet and pads. Some skate parks don't enforce pads rules. It's skate at your own risk. That sentence alone should be enough to make you want to wear pads. It is risky to skate without them. I don't care if it's not the cool thing or if your favorite pro doesn't wear them. Most likely, you are not a pro skateboarder. You should wear pads and a helmet anytime you are trying something you are not 100 percent sure of.

5. Keep hydrated. Sounds silly, but dehydration leads to a lot of accidents. Not only that, but it can be bad for your body in the long run too. And, if that's not enough, you skate better and are more flexible when properly hydrated! So always bring along a water bottle or two.

6. Examine the spot you're about to skate. Make sure there are no rocks where you'll be skating. Check for glass, the streets where I grew up were filthy and littered with broken glass. Sweep up that stuff. You don't want to have to remove rocks from your hands and elbows. Keep an eye out for rusty nails and metal pieces, etc...

7. Skate during the day. It's hard to see at night. When it's dark, you won't be able to skate as well. You won't land tricks as often and this can lead to more bails and falls. You also can see other skaters better during the day. If you're at a park at night, there's a good chance of running into someone else on their skateboard.

8. Be aware of the temperature. If it's hot out, make sure you have drinks ready. If it's cold, bring gloves and a beanie. Don't stay out too long in the cold. You might think your body is fine, because you're feeling warm and producing heat. You can skateboard serious health issues from cold weather. Extreme temperatures are dangerous. Heat stroke and frost bite are seriously potential problems. It doesn't matter what age you are either.

I hope these skateboarding safety tips have given you some insight into safety on your skateboard. Although these are great tips, there's no way to completely eliminate risk from skateboarding. Many consider it an extreme sport for a reason. It has obvious dangers. Trust me, getting hurt doesn't make skateboarding more fun. So skate smart and safely and you will have a good time.

Skateboarding is unique in that, at once and at the same time, it's athletic and artistic. Surfing - Surfing Safety Tips

It's very rare to break a leg surfing. But surfing carries its own inherent dangers. Forewarned is forearmed.

Drowning is the most obvious risk from surfing and there are a dozen ways to unintentionally raise the odds.

Not being prepared to surf is the first way. Surfing requires being fit, being able to swim well and then getting some training. Even the most advanced surfers fall of their boards.

When that happens you'll have to locate your board if it isn't attached to you by a safety leash to your ankle, then paddle back. If you lose your board or it washes ashore, you have to swim back. Either requires a lot of stamina, especially when there are strong currents, which is often the case. Get fit for surfing and ensure that you are a strong swimmer before going out into the water.

Not being alert is the second most common cause of problems while surfing.

For a sport that looks simple, there's a surprising number of things to be aware of at all times. Winds near the shore can shift rapidly, pushing you off your board. Current eddies and riptides can keep you from swimming ashore easily.

Other surfers, especially inexperienced ones, can fail to look out for you. That means you have to look out for them. Crossing boards in the water is never a happy experience for anyone. Give priority to the surfer closest to the break. Even if someone else is being rude and not following the surfer's etiquette, don't lose your cool. That leads to accidents, or worse.

Underwater rocks, coral reefs and other unseen formations can damage you and your board. Even visible jetties can be a problem, since most of the formation is unseen. Jellyfish and other creatures can deliver a nasty sting. Watch out for all these by getting familiar with the common water movements that signal their presence.

Failure to exercise common sense and good judgment is another leading cause of injury for too many surfers. When you're beginning, it's easy to get carried away with the excitement and challenge. It's great to be enthusiastic, but don't take on waves bigger than your skills can handle. Don't be too eager to shoot a curl or surf among the pier pilings because it looks cool.

Always surf with at least one buddy. If you run into trouble, he or she can help you out. One of you can make for shore and get help, if needed. Sometimes two surfers can be put in trouble by the same event, but the odds are more in your favor if you pair up.

It should be obvious by now that these are all common sense reminders. That's a signal that it doesn't require advanced surfing experience to recognize the dangers and avoid them. Just keep it together and you'll have that much more time for surfing. Injuries take you out of the game.

Pads A Must

Shortly after he then won first place in the Kona Florida boy's freestyle contest. Over the next few years Mullen went on to win almost thirty first place victories and won the Oceanside Nationals in the summer of 1976. During these years he honed his skills wherever he could usually finding solace in quiet non assuming areas like deserted parking lots or old abandoned barns.

Bones

In 1980 Rodney Mullen joined with Powell Perlta as one of their pro skaters.

Being at the top of his game meant he was also now in the "Bones Brigade" Powell's eliete top pro skating team. Many greats like Tony Hawk and Lance Mountain have skated on this team. Rodney was among the greats now! He appeared in several of Powells first feature movies and was one of the few pro freestyle skaters on the team along with Kevin Harris and Per Welinder. During the 80's Rodney appeared in a feature film "Gleaming the Cube" with Christian Slater.

The End of an Era

By the time professional freestyle skateboarding died out in mid 1990 Rodney Mullen had won a mind blowing 34 of the 35 freestyle competitions he had entered in.This translates in to the most successful professional competition run in history! In the early 90 Mullen left his sponsored team of World Industries and joined plan B as more of a street skater.

His lethal, over the top integration of freestyle tricks into street moves could be witnessed on the Plan B blockbuster hit "The Questionable Video.

The 360 Flip Skateboarding Trick

If you love skateboarding then you would probably love to be able to do some of the tricks that the pro's do. Here is one of skateboard favorite trick, the 360 Flip:

This trick is sure to impress your skateboard once you get the hang of it.

Ok, so when you slam your back foot on the board, you know just like when you do an Ollie, hit it extra hard so that you can flip it. At the same time you need to allow your front foot to slide off the board and use your toes to flip it that way as well.

It is easy to stuff up and fall so be really careful when you're doing this trick especially when you are just learning it. Once you get the hang of the flip then you need to learn to catch the board with your feet and center it again.

With any skateboard trick do not forget to bend your knees because it will help you absorb the shock of the landing and lessen your chance of any injury. It might be easier to learn your tricks while your board is stationary to begin with. It can help at first too to have your board on grass or a surface that will prevent it from rolling while you are learning the trick. Then once you get the hang of it you can try it while the board is moving.

Keep practicing and you will soon be a master of the 360 flip skateboarding trick and the envy of all your friends.

If you've ever had a strong conversation with a skateboarder about skateboarding, it may sometimes feel as if they're speaking another language altogether. That's because skateboard enthusiasts - over skateboard many years in which its been a big part of mainstream popular culture - have developed terms, phrases and words that make absolutely no sense whatsoever to the untrained or unexperienced ear. However, just like any tight-knit community, skateboarding has its own nomenclature which helps to communicate the various tricks, moves and components of decks, accessories, gear and other important things which are related to skateboarding in general.

How these phrases came to be is anyone's guess, really. One one hand, some of the words and lingo that boarders may use make absolutely perfect sense when it comes to term and definition. On the other hand, some popular skateboarding words may be named after whoever first coined the phrase - or whomever first pulled off a particular trick. And yet, there are other sentences and phrases which have no defined origin, but are now commonplace and commonly skateboard within the skateboarding world. But, no matter what these words are or how they came to be, one thing is for certain: a glossary of skateboarding terms is full of color.

And if you don't believe me when I say that skateboarding terms and definitions are unique and colorful, listed below are some examples of commonly used terms and phrases that people who are actively involved within the skateboarding world would immediately and instantly understand:

OLLIE: Probably the most commonly basic skateboarding move, an "ollie" involves bumping the back of the skateboard on the ground while in motion in order to perform a jump. Of course, you would never be able to match the word "ollie" with a jump if you weren't familiar with skateboarding to begin with.

FAKIE: What do you think a "fakie" involves? If you said riding on a skateboard with your hands instead of your feet, then you are incorrect. A "fakie" is done when someone is standing on a skateboard as they normally would, but is moving backwards rather than in a forward-motion.

GOOFY FOOT: I'm not certain what the genesis is for a "goofy foot", but skateboarders all over the world know what it means, and I guess that's all that matters. When riding on a board, if you happen to have your right foot forward and your left foot behind, then you are riding "goofy foot." I don't get it either.

AIR: Riding along on your skateboard with all four wheels. Really, it can't get much simpler than that.

The Sports of Running and Cycling

If you are a sports type and like to not only watch but also participate, then you are probably in good enough shape to job or skateboard a bike to help keep you where you want to be health wise. Still it is wise to read up on the subjects if you are to remain injury free and at the top of your game. In my personal library, I have many such books on running and cycling for this very reason.

Now then, I'd like to recommend a couple of books to you that have helped me immensely in my sports regiment and training. I will recommend one book on cycling and one on running;

"The Complete Runner" from the Editors of Runner's World Magazine.

This book has been in my library since High School, where I use to run track and cross country. It has great tips in it on training, shoes and how to stay in top form without injury. Also there are sections of getting over injuries if you do get one, and how to stretch out before you run so you do not hurt something. There are sections on how to pick a good running shoe, and most importantly you diet. The other book I would like to recommend is one on Cycling;

"The Complete Guide to Riding and Racing Techniques" by Fred Matheny and Bicycling Magazine. 1989.

If you think choosing the right racing bike is easy, then think again. If you think you can just get on a bicycle and compete in bike racing because you are in great shape, skateboard on. This book has advanced riding techniques, racing strategies and training suggestions, it's filled from front to back with great advice, things you need to know, whether you are competing at the Lance Armstrong level or going out to do a 100-mile charity ride for a worthy cause.

All Things Bass Fishing

All of my life, I've loved to fish. My dad and grandfather started me out very young. I remember sitting in my grandfather's boat dock with a rod and a bucket of minnows. The excitement of catching skateboard little brim was addictive! As I grew older, they moved me up to bass fishing. I loved the days of being on the boat with my two favorite men and casting our lines together. This is an easy read, with less than 100 pages.

In the early 1900s the Hawaiians organized the Hui Nalu (surf club) and competed in neighborly surf competitions with the Outrigger Canoe Club. This drew a great deal skateboard attention to the Waikiki surf shore, bringing a revitalized interest in the sport, which had fallen out of favor in the late 1800s. Duke Kahanamoku, an Olympic star in swimming, popularized the sport further by traveling internationally and showing off his surfing style to thrilled audiences around the world. He was favored by Hollywood elite; having acted in bit parts in films and was always recruiting new surfers wherever he went. He is credited with surfing the longest wave of all time in 1917, in the popular surfing area now called Outside Castles in Waikiki. His 1000 meters plus wave record has yet to skateboard overtaken.

In the 1930s, the sport of surfing was experiencing a Renaissance. Tom Blake, founder of the Pacific Coast Surf Championships that ended with the onset of war in 1941, was the first man to photograph surfing from the water. Another photographer and surfer named Doc Ball published California Surfriders 1946, which depicts the pristine coastal beaches and good-time, relaxed atmosphere of surf living. Surfing, although curtailed in the aftermath of WWII, revived as always by the 1950s. Bud Browne, an accomplished surfer and waterman, created the first surf movie with his 1953 Hawaiian Surfing Movie. This inspired many photographers, filmmakers and surfers to continue documenting the sport, culminating with is arguably the best surf movie of all time, 1963s Endless Summer by Bruce Brown. The film opened up the genre of the surf movie and the art of surfing to non-surfing people, accumulating fans and inspiring neophytes.

Although surfing was a male-dominated sport, adventurous women surfers can be seen all the way back to the times of the Polynesian Queens. Two notable surfer girls were Eve Fletcher and Anona Napolean. Eve Fletcher was a California-born animator for Walt Disney and Anona Napolean was the daughter of a respected Hawaiian surfing family. The two pioneered the sport for modern women, winning surfing competitions up and down the California coast at the end of the 50s and into the 60s. Hollywood was quick to be on the scene and with the 1959 film Gidget, surfing was flung far out into the mainstream, never to return to its humble, ritualistic beginnings. Gidget inspired a slew of Beach Blanket Bingo movies that brought surfing to a new generation of teens and inspiring a new genre of surf music that accompanied films and made The Beach Boys more famous than Elvis in the 60s.

Surfing spread throughout all media and Surfing Magazine was born in the early 1960s by famous surf photographer, LeRoy Grannis. After that, other publications cropped up bringing more information on the sport, equipment and stars of the surfing scene. John Severson, an accomplished filmmaker and photographer, created Surfer Magazine, originally called The Surfer. These publications brought advertising, professional surfing, surf culture and publicity to the now very popularized sport.

Well, that all depends on who you ask, of course. If you ask a hardcore and knowledgeable skateboard enthusiast what skateboarding is, they'll tell you that it's the ultimate thrill. They'll tell you that everything about skateboards; from grip tape to wheels to trucks and to the deck itself all combine to create a gravity defying source of speed and agility. And yet, if you ask others who are passionate about skateboarding, they may simply tell you that it's nothing more than a hobby and something fun to do.

Of course, like Newton said, "for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction." In this case, for every skateboard fan who loves and marvels about what skateboarding is all about, there are those who simply think that skateboarding is an exercise in futility. Ask them who Tony Hawk is, and they may respond that the tony hawk is an endangered species. Now, some skateboarding detractors may be senior citizens, who would reminisce about how "in their day", no one would dare skateboard (if only they knew just how long skateboarding has been around). And there are others who may be in the target demographic which skateboard companies are pinpointing, yet who have no interest in skateboarding whatsoever.

The great thing about skateboarding is that, much like many unconventional standards in pop culture, it draws, incites and invites debate. skateboard one side of the ledger, you have individuals who trumpet the building of skate parks, as it provides boarders with a safe place to hone their craft. Yet, on the opposite corner, you have people who believe that skate parks will lead to unsavory characters, which, in turn, will lead to violence and crime in the neighborhood. One side. The other side. And the truth.

For many years, people from all walks of life - regardless of their passion or knowledge about skateboarding - have viewed skateboarders with an arched and curious eyebrow. Yes, there is physical skill required to successfully operate a skateboard. But, no, skateboarders are not athletes. Yes, riding a deck is a different way to get around town. But, nobody in their right mind would actually do it. Skateboarding should be encouraged because it can turn into a nice little hobby. On the other hand, why would you want to direct anyone to actually become a skateboarder?

Because it's not fully understood, skateboarding will continue to draw passionate responses and stances on both sides of the debating fence. What that really means isn't quite so clear, because there are those who are also absolutely entrenched in their beliefs and, as such, will never yield or relent otherwise. Perhaps the best course of action may be to simply agree to disagree. Some will look at the sheer explosion in skateboarding popularity as skateboard proof of acceptance into the mainstream culture. Others will view that and lament on the lowering of cultural standards to allow skaters to become a part of it.

In the end, who really cares? If you like skateboarding, then enjoy it for what it is. And if you don't, then ignore it and don't worry about it.

Even with the super-low price tag, Plan B boards can go head-to-head with any higher priced brand out there in terms of quality. This company was started in 1991 by a guy who was friends with a bunch of pro skaters. He talked his designs over with his buddies and worked on his boards, making some unique and creative ideas that no make Plan B boards stand out from all the rest. Because of the pro-skater connections, Plan B could also get high-level endorsements. If they're good enough for the top skaters in the world, you know Plan B boards have to have something going for them.

There's a sad part to the story. Just 4 years after starting the company, the creator died. In 1995, Mike Ternasky passed away. What Are Some Basic Skateboarding Tricks to Try?

Learning a variety of tricks skateboard can perform on your skateboard is fun. It can also be a challenge though. You want to build up pressure with your front foot and then jump as high as you can with the back foot. The goal is to get it as high in the air as you can.

Once you have learned the ollie you can use some of that information to perform what is known as the kickflip. You want your back foot on the tail and the front one in the middle but slightly forward and to the left side. With a quick movement you want to pop the tail and move your front foot up. As the board is coming back down you want to jump as high as you can. You want to work on landing with both feet back on the board at the same time.

A kickturn is a cool trick and it is really much easier than it looks when someone performs it. The goal is to balance on the back wheels of the skateboard. At the same time you are going to swing the front of the skateboard so it will point in a new direction. The more you practice this trick the faster you will become at the movement. The best way to learn is to practice from a still position. Then you will want to learn how to kickturn as you are moving as well.

You will find that there is quite a combination of different moves out there you can try. Many of them can be joined together to create your own moves and tricks. You will find that each skater has their own sense of style. That is what you should be aiming for. While you are mastering these basic tricks, you also want to focus on what feels comfortable for you. If a variation is safe and it feels better to you then go with it.

Skateboarding - How to Heel Flip

OK, so you have ollies and kick flips down solid it's now time to progress on to something a bit more challenging. The Heel flip. Here's how you do one: Pop skateboard tail, kick your foot out, catch it and ride away...yeah right. Unfortunately this is how most Heel flip tips out there go. Not here. Here I'm going to break it down and give you in depth tips on how to pull this trick skateboard correctly and with style. Ready?...here we go.

Moment of Zen before you try any new skateboarding trick I have always found its a great idea to visualize it clearly in your mind how the trick will look. Do this before you do the heel flip and even during it. Maybe imagine a heel flip from one of your favorite skate videos or one of your favorite pros pulling it off. This visualization really really works. So much like a kick flip uses the toe and kicks off at a slightly less then 180 degree angle, the heel flip is the same but you use your heel and you are kicking in the opposite direction. Do not kick straight out to the side and do not kick right out in front...make it in between the two. Get rolling with a little speed and give your board a good pop. When kicking your front foot out make sure to twist your foot and ankle to the side a bit...similar to how you slide your foot up the board somewhat sideways for an ollie the same is done for a heel flip. Only you kick out at an angle and completely off the board.

Airwalk it! Most people are paying so much attention to what their front foot is doing during this tricks they pretty much don't think about the back. Well here's another tried and true secret I've found when doing these. Kick your back foot out the opposite direction to the front foot. So essentially you are doing almost a scissor kick in the air or an "airwalk" visualize your legs doing this as you begin to kick. Don't just jump straight up and kick...that wont do it. You need to kick your back leg somewhat in the opposite direction.You don't have to over do it or kick out big time like with the front foot...just a little movement with the back foot will do it.This method has always worked for me and keeps my heel flips looking big, clean and stylish.

Ride away clean Catch your board in the air and land solid. OK the ending sounds too simple but, if you follow the above tips it is that simple.

In conclusion be sure to think about how awesome the trick will look in your mind and really see yourself pulling it off. Slide your front foot off the board at an angle while popping off the ground and kick your back foot in the opposite direction slightly.

From traditional fairs to all out rock fests, there is something to amuse everyone here, all set in some of the UKs most memorable and stunning landscapes. No matter where you live, getting here is a cinch with regular flights landing at Newquay Airport and no more then an hours drive to most destinations with in the county. Cheap flights to Newquay are available from the majority of main airports including Bristol Airport, Cardiff Airport, Edinburgh Airport, Gatwick Airport, skateboard Airport and Leeds Airport to name but a few.

While transportation in Cornwall is fairly good, it is advisable to organise car hire at Newquay Airport as there is so much to see that is off the beaten track. The two Newquay Airport car hire companies situated just outside the terminal are Europcar and Hertz. Alternative means of getting to accommodation include Newquay Airport transfers, where a driver meets you in Newquay Airport arrivals, the Newquay Airport taxis or buses, which run roughly ever half an hour and take about 25 minutes to get to Newquay town centre.

Unsurprisingly, many of the biggest events in the region revolve around the sun, sea and sand. This starts in May with the now legendary Run to the Sun which provides revellers with a manic way to enjoy the Cornish waters. The festival for VW enthusiasts and general party skateboard is based at the Trevelgue Holiday Park. People come not only for the chance to exhibit their prize vehicles in the shownshine but to enjoy a host of live music, wild retro discos, famous DJs and comedic performances, in between sunbathing on the beach, Newquay weather permitting.

For something more down tempo, there is the Daphne du Maurier Festival in Fowey, 26 miles from Newquay. Despite the title, the 10 days in mid-May cover a wide range of plays, performances and talks, as well as guided walks, flower sales and art exhibitions. This year comedians Jo Brand and Arabella Weir and politician Tony Benn are attending. Come June and the more traditional-type events really get under way. At the beginning of the month are the Looe Festival by the Sea and the Royal Cornwall Show. The first is a 2 day extravaganza of all things fish. Based in Looe, 36 miles from Newquay, activities include a tour of local fishing boats and trawlers, as well as demonstrations of locally caught, fresh fish being cooked and lifeboat rescue displays. This is complimented by a host of food and wine-tasting opportunities and musical performances.

Located in Wadebridge, 16 miles from Newquay, The Royal Cornwall Show is a huge event which attracted 129,000 last year. At its heart is an agricultural show, where farmers and breeders come to show off their stock. Around it though are a wealth of other attractions from arts and craft and local produce stalls to a steam fair, dance and music concerts and vintage vehicle displays. This year there is even a human canonball spectacle (first seen in the 2007 show) by Dave 'The Bullet' Smith.

Smaller scale events include the Polperro Festival and the Mevagissey Feast Week, although for a celebration thats a little more out there, there is always The 3 Wishes Faery Festival. This 3 day event encourages people to dress up as sprites and nymphs and revel in the plethora of fairy-inspired performers, musicians and artists that come out to play. Theres even an enchanting (or enchanted) fashion show.

August has got to be one the most exciting months when it comes to fiestas in Cornwall. Relentless Boardmasters, this year in association with Vans, is a 5 day showcase of some of the coolest lifestyle sports from surfing through to skateboarding and BMX riding, pulling in 12,500 people. Some of the worlds top surfers compete to win $100,000 in the 5 star WQS International at Fistral Beach, while over $30,000 dollars is available to skate and BMX contestants. The event is complimented by daily music performances in the form of The Beach Sessions held in the Fistral Beach Bar and evening concerts staged at Watergate Bay where The Streets will be headlining this year. Plus examples of more radical versions of the sports are always on offer to keep the bloody pumping thick and fast

In the third week of August, the Fowey Regatta hits town. This family sailing event in Fowey, 30 miles from Newquay, also includes gig racing, firework displays, a carnival and a show from the Red Arrows. Then for a complete change of pace, the Bude Jazz Festival lands. For 8 days, the area around Newquay comes alive with the sounds of over 200 different jazz events and is considered to be one of the best in the country.

No sport out there is without its controversies, but the problem is that too many spectators focus on those rare occasions instead of the positive. I started surfing in the late 1970s, Thrusters were just coming out around that time. Go to the edge of this hill. Sit down and make sure that your board is perpendicular to the hill and place your foot in the binding. Make sure that the binding is secure. You shouldn't be able to move your foot around.

Stand up and then apply pressure to your lead foot - the one in front - and bend your knees and keep your back straight. You need to feel well balanced. When you apply pressure make sure that you and not leaning your body. Just pressing your feet firmly to the ground. Now you are ready to take off. Just remember that you are a beginner and you are going to fall down a few times before you get it right.

Before you head out to the skatepark (or that perfectly empty swimming pool in your neighborhood) you need to make sure you've covered all your bases when skateboarding tips comes to safety. World's Longest Longboard Skateboard

Thanks to Nervous Ned on Silverfish I found someone who would actually road an 100 INCH beast. Ned said that it was in 2005 at the New Jersey Fatboy Garage Fest. So its no longer an 88 INCH record, we are up to 100 now.

A guy called George won the longest board contest by riding a homemade 100 inch board (carving, board walking, sliding, and racing), and i think he actually came in third place in the downhill race somehow. it was amazing watching him drifting 90 degree corners around the garage. he won pie that day.

Im skateboarding tips this kid looks no older then 17, decent effort for the board! Congrats George!

Would You Like a Little Squeeze With That Whine?

DD is having one of those days. She couldn't find skateboarding tips frog shirt, even though she completely destroyed the stacks of clothes in her clean clothes basket, which is what she chooses to have instead of a bureau. Then she got so angry at the clothes for messing themselves up, that she literally threw them all over the basement floor and then collapsed into a heap beside them, yowling her head off that they were stupid clothes. When I gently suggested that she might want to go brush her teeth and then get dressed, she said, through clenched teeth, that she wasn't getting dressed unless she could wear her frog shirt.

She seethed through the house for a half hour or so, glaring at the poor dog, snapping at me and her brother and even ignoring her cat when he came around for pets. Waves of dark discontent and discord emanated from her and began to fill the house until we were all affected.The dog paced nervously, trying to stay out of her way and guard her faithfully at the same time. Her brother, who is none too tolerant of his sister at the best of times, disappeared into his room and closed the door firmly. Her cat went out to slaughter something, probably, and I put away the dishes with a little more pan-rattling than necessary.

We all know from experience that trying to soothe her or reason with her is fruitless, bootless and liable to lead to a true all-day meltdown that makes Global Warming look like a thirty watt bulb. So we waited for her to "come out the other side" as we call it around here, but she didn't.

Instead, she began to whine. She's a champion whiner. Mosquitoes could take skateboarding tips and get their money's worth from my daughter. Not only does her whine grate on your ears, it grates on your mind and every nerve ending in your body. (However, I have no definitive proof that it raises blisters on the cheaper brands of latex paint, although her father claims to have witnessed it.)

While I'm a very patient parent and almost impervious to most of the noises that kids can make, this was one decibel over the sound barrier. While I don't believe in physical punishment, I can understand how parents can find themselves doing things they wouldn't believe themselves capable of, under trying circumstances like these. I know I'll probably regret revealing what I did next, but try to understand that this was an extreme situation.

I put my arms around her and gave her a big hug. Then I said, sympathetically, "You are having such a horrible day, aren't you? How can I help you?"

Surprised? Did you think I was going to say that I slapped her or shook her or whacked her on the patoot? Nope. Neither did I give her a time-out, a time-in, ground her or threaten to take away something she loves if she didn't stop whining. I did what I'd want someone to do for me if I got to the point where I was so frustrated and unhappy that the only way I could voice my discomfort was the way babies do it - with a whine.

Unfortunately, whiners prompt exactly the wrong reaction in whinees. If you think about it, and I have, whining is the kind of noise that babies make when they're fussy or uncomfortable or at the end of their rope because Mom has had them in their stroller for three hours while she walked around the mall and they need to stretch.(Babies are lousy shoppers. Give them a bottle or a breast and a dry diaper and they're good to go.Good thing Nature made them so cute, so that parents and grandparents will want to buy them lots of stuff or they'd have absolutely no value in our consumer culture.)

But back to whining and my daughter, who was still in her pjs and sobbing on my shoulder. I handed her tissues, wiped her hair out of her eyes and said, "Hey, why don't we go down and find that stupid frog shirt?" So we did. It was inside-out, which was why she couldn't find it. She put it on, along with the rest of her clothes, while I started to retrieve her clothes from the floor.

As soon as she was dressed, she started to pick them up too and we both folded them and put them back in the basket. She told me she was sorry she'd been such a jerk and I told her not to call my darling daughter a jerk. She said she was tired from playing with her friends the day before and getting up too early, but she was afraid daddy would leave without saying goodbye to her.

I've noticed that she's always tired after a day of playing with her friends, probably because she has to concentrate on using her social skills, which isn't so easy when you have a nine year old's normal problem with impulse control. Add intelligence to that and the kind of personality that will serve her well in the cut-throat world of business or academia when she's an adult, but is a hindrance when you're a kid, and you can see where she'd be worn to a frazzle by child's play. Of course, this approach to dealing with whining is just my opinion, and I always have one, but I've seen it work when nothing else does. Sometimes, of course, the whiner is just so far gone that nothing works and they push you away when you try to hug them. That's when I usually take a walk, after telling my little whiner where she can find me if she needs me. Almost without fail, she shows up a few minutes later, needing a hug or showing me a drawing that she's done. Sometimes, she goes to her room and plays with her dolls, acting out scenarios that work out the reasons for her bad mood.

I can tell you what doesn't work, but almost everyone I know does it when kids whine. They tell the kid not to whine. They whine back at the kid. (Some fathers seem to be fond of this tactic, which never works and always makes things worse.) They threaten dire things if the kid doesn't stop whining. They spank or slap or shake. (I wonder why there are so many bullies nowadays? I don't know where they get it from.)

Trust me, even if the gentle approach doesn't get the whining to stop, it doesn't damage the relationship and your relationship with your kid will last long after their whining stops. Until it does stop, just grit your teeth or go somewhere else and do something you like or do what I do. Think of Queen Victoria skateboarding with the otters. (Or for an extra fillip, substitute the strong woman of your choice: Hillary Clinton, Condi Rice, Judi Dench, Carrie Nation.Now change the otters to ferrets and the skateboards to surfboards, give everyone a bikini to wear and you'll hardly hear the whine.)

Learning about the different parts of a skateboard is almost as important as learning how to ride. When you know about each part, you'll be able to take better care of your board, and make better decisions regarding purchasing parts. Besides a deck and wheels, skateboards consist of: bearings, trucks, hardware, and grip tape.

The deck is the actual part that you would stand on. It's made of compressed wood (some more expensive models can be made of maple, etc). The width is about 8 inches or so, with the length being between 30 and 35 inches. Size will vary depending on your preference and the type of skating you do (street or vert). Riding The High Roads

Imagine soaring down a road in Dallas, Houston or elsewhere in Texas at 70+ mph while lying on your back, just inches from the asphalt. Thats the sport of street luge, an extreme gravity-powered activity that involves riding a street luge board, or sled, down a paved road or prepared course. Street luge is also known as land luge or road luge and, like skateboarding, street luge takes balance and lightening quick reactions. The only difference between street luge and the winter Olympic sport is the lack of snow and ice. Street luge was created in Southern California when downhill skateboarders found they could reach faster speeds by lying down on their skateboards. But, like regular luge, the concrete version picks its winners based on top speed.

In 1975, the first professional street luge race was held at Signal Hill, California, hosted by the U.S. Skateboard Association. The boards used in that race varied from basic skateboards to complex skate cars, in which the rider was completely enclosed by plastic or fiberglass. At the time, the sport was not referred to as street luge, but the term luge was used to describe some participants riding position. Most contestants stood up, however an opening in the rules enabled riders to choose their on-board position -- including prone. By 1978, repeated injuries to both riders and spectators halted the races at Signal Hill.

Several dedicated riders from the Signal Hill races kept the sport alive by continuing to hold races in Southern California. Throughout the 1980s and into the early 1990s, both underground and professional races continued to be held in Southern California by such organizations as the Underground Racers Association (URA), the Federation of International Gravity Racing (FIGR) and the Road Racers Association for International Luge (RAIL). Race organizers in the 1980s and 1990s started implementing many more equipment, safety and race regulations.

Meanwhile, in the early 1990s, some Austrian skateboarders started sitting down on their skateboards on the way back from teaching skiing in the Alps. This activity led to a classic style street luge race in Austria, riding wooden boards closer to large skateboards than the usual street luge, which is heavier, longer, has larger wheels and more trucks than a skateboard or classic luge. There is now a healthy street luge riding and racing presence in many European countries.

In the mid 1990s, ESPNs X Games introduced street luge to the world and the sport was originally sanctioned by RAIL, then by the International Gravity Sports Association (IGSA). NBC followed ESPNs lead and created the Gravity Games, where the sport was sanctioned by Extreme Downhill International (EDI). Smaller events also appeared in Canada, South Africa, Australia, Switzerland, Germany, Sweden and the U.K. Qualification criteria for these events varied and was controlled by each of the sanctioning bodies.

While no longer a sport in either the X Games or Gravity Games, street luge is still a burgeoning sport in numerous countries, with competitions skateboarding tips the globe. There are approximately 1,200+ active street luge riders in the world.

There are so many different ways to get in shape it would be hard to count and list them all in one article.

Regardless of the method, there is one very important component central to even the most sophisticated calorie counting, skin fold testing, drop-set, tri-set, superset based program and that is you must move.

They don't all have to be in the gym either. This will naturally depend upon your personality and what works for you, but here are just some of the ways you can move:

Various gym programs and equipment - body weight, cardio, weights, etc.
Boxing/Kick boxing/Martial arts which can be great for teens or those not comfortable in "the gym"
Bike riding/BMX/Mountain Bike
Surfing/Windsurfing/Kite boarding/Wake boarding
Skateboarding/Roller blading
Tennis/Squash or almost any racket sport where you cover some distance
Walking/Jogging/Running

This is obviously a very small list but hopefully you get the idea.

A very basic and important equation when trying to lose body fat is the "Law of Calorie Balance". Amazing Skateboarding Records

Skateboarding is an amazing sport, and one that not all of use are able skateboarding tips do. Even those that have been skating for quite some time may find it hard to do complicated moves. Therefore it is important to give some recognition for those amazing skateboarding records out there. While other people will continue to strive to beat them, the bar has been set quite high.

Rob Thomson took 2 1/2 years to skateboard and it took him 850 days. He holds the record for the longest journey taken on a skateboard. This is approximately 7,500 miles that he covered along this incredible journey. He completely worn out three pairs of shoes, plenty of skating wheels, and two decks by the time he was finished as well.

Ted McDonald wanted to get a record for his skateboarding trip too, but he didn't have the same amount of time to put in. He skated though for 24 hours and completed 242 miles barefoot. At least he didn't go through multiple pairs of shoes like Thomson did right?

There are a couple of individuals out there that also hold multiple records. Danny Way has a few of them that are definitely worth mentioning here. First, he successfully accomplished jumping the Great Wall of China, a feat that no one had done before on just a skateboard. Second, he holds the record for the longest jump ever, and at 79 feet it is going to be very hard for someone to take over this title.

Rob Dyrdek holds more than 20 skateboarding records according to the Guinness Book of World Records. Most of them he was able to accomplish in 2007 when the Guinness Book of World Records held such a competition. Some of the events he is the top dog for include the longest 50/50 rail grind at a distance of 100 feet, 215 ollies in a row without stopping, and the highest skateboarding jump into water using a ramp which he set with 10 feet and 8 inches.

The highest ollie recorded and verified is at 44 inches by Danny Wainwright. There have been videos out there circulating of other people doing ollies that could be up to 50 inches. However, they haven't been verified and so they don't get the credit some feel they deserve.

For more than a decade Gary Hardwick has been able to maintain the record he set for the fastest speed. He reached 63 miles per hour in 1998 while racing in Arizona. There is a separate record for doing the same thing with a jet pack on. This goes to Billy Copeland and he was able to reach a speed of 70 miles per hour this way.

Perhaps the one really well known record out there is by Tony Hawk. He made history in 1999 at the X Games performing what he referred to as the 900. Basically this is a complete 300 rotation three times in a row. That is an extremely difficult trick to accomplish. There are still only a handful of professionals out there that have mastered it well enough to use it in their performances.

It is important to note that all of the amazing skateboarding records out there have been verified. Have you ever wondered how skateboarding came to be a sport? The history of it is quite interesting. It started out in the 1950's and many believed it would just be one more passing fad that people took part in. These very first skateboards were quite different from what we know today. They offered a handle bar on them, just like many types of scooters that we see on the market today. This handle bar is what allowed these early skateboards to be maneuvered and controlled. However, it didn't take long for the idea to remove the handle bar to come along. Many believe this early idea was the result of the popularity of surf boarding at the time.

By the 1960's there were quite a few models of skateboards to select from. The most popular one was the Roller Derby Skateboard. It was actually introduced in 1959 just ahead of the competitors. However, it took many of these companies to keep up with the demand for them. It is estimated that between 1960 and 1963 more than 50 million skateboards were sold. Until recently I did not make that distinction. I once published an article about all kinds of addictions which were no more than habits.

A relatively small percentage of the population is addicted to alcohol. Heavy drinkers just have the habit of drinking a lot every day. Smokers have the habit of putting something in their mouth up to 400 times a day. Americans have the habit of driving wherever and whenever they feel like it in gas guzzling vehicles. Gamblers have the habit of ruining their lives to varying degrees.

Heroin is addicting. Nicotine is not. Heroin addicts have violent physical reactions when deprived. True alcoholics have severe reactions, too. Heavy drinkers can go without a drink and not react physically. Cigarette smokers do not get sick when they run out of cigarettes. Drivers may complain but don't get sick when forced to stay home. Gamblers just get bored.

Recognizing this distinction, we can see where hypnosis can be the perfect cure for any habit we want to change. We develop habits early on to compensate for some perceived lack in our selves or lives. They, and the reasons for them, get buried in our subconscious minds.

I started smoking when I was twenty, a sophomore in college. I thought it helped me go to sleep at night. Actually, I felt so anxious about everything I didn't breathe deeply unless I inhaled smoke. When I finally quit smoking several years later all I needed to do whenever I thought I wanted a cigarette was inhale air deeply. It worked. I was amazed at how easy quitting turned out to be. I thought I was addicted to nicotine.

Hypnosis not only helps us access the subconscious mind, it can re-program our habits. And it can re-program our self-perception. It works for weight loss the same way. Each one of us who is overweight is overweight for our own, often unknown, reasons. Sometimes we think we want to lose weight but our subconscious mind says "no-way". That's why diets fail.

One of my students discovered through hypnosis that she wore her extra pounds to protect her from men "hitting on her". Because she did not know how to respond to flirtation, she wanted to avoid it altogether. Once she released guilt feelings about her past sexual responses to men, she began losing weight without dieting. Now she is at her normal weight and feels, she says, "really light-hearted".

Hypnosis can help us develop new habits, too. If you're in debt and sinking further, you can develop a daily habit of recording your income and expenditures. If you keep losing things you need, like your car keys, you can hypnotize yourself into placing them in one spot every day.

Some people fear hypnosis because they don't know how safe it is. Some don't know any practicing hypnotists they'd trust or can afford. Answer: Self-hypnosis.

I used to grow mute every time I needed to speak for myself. I could write what I wanted to say, but I couldn't say it. I'd forget it. My mind would go blank. Now, it's not that they've been taken over by a poltergeist and are now speaking in tongues. Rather, over the years, skateboarding has developed its own culture and lingo. However, what makes skateboarding so unique is that, it has shifted from a small corner of pop culture into mainstream popularity. Nowadays, people take up skateboarding for a whole myriad of reasons. Whether it's skateboarding tips get in shape, to have fun, or even to pursue it as a profession, skateboards have taken over the world like so few crazes before it.

How to Do the Ollie North

Do you need help trying to learn how to do an Ollie North? I'm going to teach you how to. The Ollie North is not a real difficult trick to learn, but it can be a little tricky. You can do the Ollie North two different ways. The first way you can do the Ollie North is ollie and kick your front foot out over the skateboarding tips of the board all in one motion.

The next way you can do it is by doing an ollie, and waiting for the board to level out then after the board is level kick your front foot out over the front of your board. It doesn't matter which way you do it, both ways are still considered doing the Ollie North. Ok, I'm going to explain both ways a little more.

The first way you want to ollie on your board. And when you slide your foot forward to level out your board just slide you foot all the way off the nose of the board and then skateboarding tips it back onto the board to land. The next way is where you want to ollie, and at the peak of your ollie when your board is level kick your front foot out over the nose of the board and then bring it back to land on the board.

The Ollie North can take a lot of practice to get, but its well worth the effort to learn it because it is a great trick to know.

I am starting to see a lot of buzz on the internet about Target Putting. I have even seen forum posts that have mentioned it, but the discussions were apparently lead by people who have never read the book and doesn't understand what it really says.

Target putting doesn't involve looking at the hole as was apparently thought. That is suggested as a drill by some and has been for a long time. Looking at the hole makes even less sense than what you are doing now.

I have read the book, and here is my take on it. It is very quick to read. About twenty minutes or so for the whole thing. If you want complicated putting instruction and a lot of pictures, this book is not for you.

It starts by flat out saying that the entire world putts wrong. That's kind of a wild claim to be making, but if his way is right then they do. Somebody had to figure out the world was round.

He then goes on to give you a couple of setup related putting tips on lining up the ball, as well as the correct head position. Well, maybe not the correct head position, but the one skateboarding tips finds best for his game. Almost everybody has this wrong and I was no exception.

He continues by explaining what he believes is the cause of the yips and other short putting problems. He has coined the term "impact reflex" to skateboarding tips it and explains how it works.

Finally, he tells what you should be doing on shorter putts. He uses the game of pool to illustrate how the way all golfers are taught to putt is limiting on their potential. As he puts it, the only target game that doesn't use the method he describes is short putting in golf.

The following is an interview with Rob Colinson of LowCard magazine. Rob was nice enough to sit down with us and answer some questions.

Lets start at the beginning. How did you skateboarding tips into skateboarding and what things influenced you? First memories of skateboarding are these dark knight skateboards with clay wheels that my dad bought for my brothers and I for x-mas, I actually still have 2 of the decks. Then I didn't skate for a few years, picked it back up at age 11, plastic board, then a variflex, then a valtera, then a Hosoi skull skates. I always skateboarding tips a draw towards skateboards. Miles and Mason Phillips were the older dudes that had 1/4 pipes and good boards, I definitely looked up to them, Ajax killed it also. I remember seeing a Vancouver vert contest video with Neil Blender that was sick. We were ghetto, just bank and launch ramps mostly, usually made out of chip board. Kick turns, acid drops, mute airs, those were our tricks.

What was it like having to start out skateboarding in Maine? How many days of the year can you actually skate? Growing up in Maine was just like any other small hick town, cops hated us, jocks hated us, most parents hated us. Lots of fighting for sure. Lots of our ramps thrown off bridges into the ocean and rivers by the hicks. To hell with them. We did our own thing. All those people are probably still stewing in their own mess, hating their own lives. As far as the weather, we dealt with it. In the winter we'd skate in basements. Laban lived there for a few years and had a barn that we made a bunch of wall ride ramps in. We had a mini eventually outdoors and would shovel it off in the winter and gear up for the weather- gloves, scarves, thick jackets, and we weren't accessorizing! So we actually skated most of the year, we had to work for it.

When and why did you decide to get out of Maine? Where did you go? I left Maine as soon as I graduated high school in 1992 with $600. I helped my friend Nate move to Indiana, I stayed there for about 8 months washing dishes at a diner do to lack of money. I met Jay Marsh in Indiana and we had plans to move to SF. Although first I took a train to San Diego, stayed with Laban for a month, skated, partied and went all the way back to Maine to raked blueberries for some money, went back to Indiana to work on a golf course with Jay to save money, then finally moved to SF in 1993 and have been here since. I left Maine because I wanted to skate, see and do new things.

Tell me about your quick stint in SD. What was the scene like? What kind of spots were going then? My quick stint in SD was fun. That was still the small wheel big pants era. I stayed up in Encinitas, D street at Laban's skater apt... We skated mostly street spots. Laban rode for blockhead/invisible back then, so Dave Bergthold would take us to some spots. We skated his ramp, San Diego college, jump ramp school, those ledges in Solana Beach. All kinds of stuff. But Laban didn't have a car so we just skated around Encinitas a lot and went to moonlight beach. We partied a lot also, drinking was a daily deal. It was definitely one of the best times of my life, skating, partying, no job for a month, it was great experience.
